What is Huntingdonshire Emergency Warning System (HEWS)?

HEWS is a warning system which has been developed by Huntingdonshire District Council Emergency Planning Team to advise members of any possible difficulties created by a major incident in the District.

Why has it been developed?

It has been developed as part of Huntingdonshire District Council’s response to the Civil Contingencies Act 2004.  This places a statutory duty on the local authority to warn and inform the public of major disasters or incidents affecting their area. The Emergency Planning Team also recognises the fact that many of the District’s community commute outside of the area and may not always have access to local news and information.  Therefore this system is one way of enabling them to receive relevant information should there be a major incident which could affect their journey home.

Huntingdonshire residents – particularly those who work out of the district - are being invited to sign up to a text and e-mail message service that will warn them about major emergency incidents which might occur in Huntingdonshire. The service is also available to members of the public who work in the district but reside outside it.  However, the information provided will only refer to the Huntingdonshire District area.

Those who sign up will receive free text message alerts and/or emails to give information about major emergencies. This scheme is not intended to replace the existing Environment Agency 'Floodline' flood warning system text service. This service will enhance the 'Floodline' service.  This scheme will also provide information on other types of major incidents.

Persons signing up for the scheme, either text messaging and/or email messaging, must agree to the Terms and Conditions for the scheme.  The Terms and Conditions relating to this scheme can be found by clicking on the link.
