Together we can drive down vehicle crime in Huntingdonshire
Although reports to the police of vehicle crime are on the decrease, there are still too many vehicles being stolen or broken into or damaged.
This is why Huntingdonshire District Council is committed to helping to reduce this type of crime, and why we are part of the countywide Vehicle Crime Reduction Partnership, which was launched in 2004.
The Vehicle Crime Reduction Partnership is made up of a number of public and private organisations who recognise the upset and anxiety that this type of crime causes. The Partnership is working to reduce crime against all types of vehicles, including lorries and motorbikes and aims to target 'hotspot' areas where vehicle crime occurs.
Security Tips
There are plenty of things you can do to prevent being a victim of vehicle crime. Here is some basic advice (the advice given here is not exhaustive and is not guaranteed to stop a vehicle crime taking place, but may help to deter a potential criminal).
- Lock all doors, windows, boot and sunroof EVERY time you leave your car.
- Never leave ANYTHING on display.
- Consider fitting security devices to your car such as: alarms or immobilisers. If these are too expensive consider buying a steering wheel lock, locking wheel nuts and locking fuel caps.
- Keep your keys safe. - NEVER leave your vehicle unattended when the keys are in the ignition. - Take your keys to bed with you.
- Etch or security mark your vehicle.
- Remove car radios/stereos, if you can.
- Park your car safely. - If you have a garage at home, use it. - If not, park on your drive or in a well lit street. - Use public car parks that are part of the police 'secured car parks scheme'.
- When driving keep doors and windows locked and belongings out of view.
